Why Gen Z talks the way we do

The way Gen Z speaks is often criticized for sounding too informal, too online, or too difficult for older generations to understand. Slang, abbreviations, and internet expressions are sometimes dismissed as lazy or incorrect. However, this view is too simple. The way Gen Z talks reflects the environment we have grown up in, which is shaped by technology, fast communication, and constant exposure to different communities and cultures.

Language naturally changes over time. Every generation develops its own expressions, humor, and ways of communicating. In the case of Gen Z, much of this has been influenced by social media, texting, memes, and online platforms where language moves quickly. As a result, words can take on new meanings, tone can be communicated through very small phrases, and certain expressions can spread across millions of people almost instantly.

This matters because Gen Z language is not only about being funny or trendy. It is also a way of creating belonging. Slang often helps people signal shared experiences, cultural awareness, and group identity. At the same time, older generations may misunderstand it because they are hearing the words without the context that gives them meaning. In many cases, the issue is not that Gen Z is speaking incorrectly. It is that language is evolving in a space that not everyone shares equally.

Therefore, the way Gen Z talks should not simply be seen as a problem or a decline in language. It is a reflection of how communication changes with culture, technology, and identity. Like every generation before it, Gen Z is shaping language in a way that fits the world it lives in.
